What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated versions of the natural oils contained within plants. Discover how these precious oils are produced, how these natural plant essences contain compounds with many therapeutic properties, and why all oils aren’t the same!

The essential oils are extracted from the plants via the process of distillation, with CO2 or steam distillation the options available. The type of plant being used will determine which part of the plant is used to extract the oils. For example our Rose de Mai Otto essential oil is produced from the petals of the flower, however our Boswellia Sacra or Myrrh essential oils are extracted from a sap which oozes from the bark of the tree.

Upon completion of the distillation process we are left with a highly concentrated pure essential oil, with the same fragrance and properties of the plant – in other words the oil will contain the essence of the plant it came from. This is not just the fragrance but all the healing properties and characteristics as well! Its no surprise these precious plant or herb extracts have so many uses.

Essential oils =

therapeutic Properties

Before we explore the therapeutic properties of essential oils it is important to understand why plants develop these properties in the first place. Some plants have developed these properties to provide protection against predators and disease, while other plants have developed specific properties that play a role in pollination.

These same special properties are then carried forward into the essential oils through the distillation process. This knowledge was common to ancient peoples who used these oils as medicines and we are now seeing a revival as people rediscover the natural and therapeutic properties of these precious oils which offer benefits to both physical and psychological health and well-being.

Essential oils are most commonly known for their aromatherapy application, where healing effects come from aromas of the essential oils, with many oils believed to have an uplifting effect on the mind. Other properties of essential oils include antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, calmative and many more.
